More Than Time: How One Connection Can Make a Difference

Sometimes making a difference doesn't begin with money. It begins with showing up.

A conversation. A familiar voice. Someone willing to listen.

These things may appear small, but connection can be meaningful for an older person. For culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) older Australians, feeling understood can also involve having their language, culture and experiences recognised.

More Than Volunteering

Volunteering is not simply about giving away time. It can also mean giving someone something valuable: connection.

AfCAS works to improve access to culturally appropriate services for people from diverse backgrounds. Its activities include raising awareness, connecting diverse communities with service providers, and empowering people to access appropriate care.

AfCAS also delivers the Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme in Western Australia. The program provides friendship and companionship to older people who may experience social isolation. AfCAS particularly focuses on people from CALD backgrounds, where cultural and language differences can contribute to isolation.

Your Time Can Have Meaning

Making a difference does not always require a huge gesture.

Sometimes it starts with listening.

Sometimes it is sharing a conversation.

Sometimes it is simply being there.

AfCAS asks potential volunteer visitors from bilingual or non-English-speaking backgrounds to consider spending two hours each month visiting a migrant senior.

Your Support Matters Too

Giving time is not the only way to contribute. AfCAS also accepts financial support to help its efforts to provide services to culturally diverse communities.
