Every Elder Has a Story. Every Story Matters.

Perth is home to people from many cultural backgrounds, each bringing their own languages, traditions and life experiences. Our older community members have helped shape this diversity. Their stories connect generations, and their knowledge keeps cultural traditions alive. As they grow older, they deserve to feel respected, included and supported.

For older people from multicultural backgrounds, finding a sense of belonging can sometimes be challenging. Language differences, unfamiliar surroundings or distance from family may make it harder to connect with others. AfCAS, a not-for-profit organisation helping older people in Perth’s multicultural community, has an important role in supporting a more welcoming and inclusive community.

Connection Begins with Feeling Welcome

Think about arriving somewhere and being unsure whether anyone will understand your language or respect your customs. For some older people, this uncertainty can make reaching out difficult.

A friendly greeting, a patient conversation or an invitation to participate can make a difference. Feeling welcome gives people the confidence to share their experiences and build relationships. Community connection can begin with something as simple as sitting together over a cup of tea.

Supporting older people also means recognising that everyone has different needs and preferences. Some may enjoy meeting new people, while others may prefer smaller, quieter conversations.Taking time to listen helps us understand what meaningful connection looks like for each person.

Culture Is Part of Who We Are

Culture influences how we communicate, celebrate, eat and understand care. For older people, familiar traditions can provide comfort and a strong sense of identity.

Respecting cultural differences means asking questions rather than making assumptions. It means listening to how someone wishes to be supported and recognising the importance of their language, beliefs and customs.

Older people also have much to contribute. Sharing a family recipe, teaching a few words in another language or telling a story from childhood can bring people together. These moments help younger generations appreciate the experiences of their elders.

Families and Communities Can Make a Difference

Creating an inclusive Perth is something we can all take part in. Family members, carers, neighbours and community groups can help older people maintain connections and feel valued.

A regular phone call, an offer to spend time together or help finding community information can be a useful starting point. The key is to involve older people in decisions and respect their independence.

Take the First Step
