Hello to action: Making connection to satisfaction

It is a popular belief that homelessness is a one-time situation, when you lose your house, sleep on the street, or can be seen in the street. However, in actual sense, homelessness creeps in. It starts with the late bills, meals skipped to pay rent, with silence. These initial signs of crisis remain unknown to most of the families in the Perth northern suburbs.

We think we should change that story at The Spiers Centre. We are campaigning on our “It Starts with Hello” campaign which is regarding being aware of warning signs ahead and having a simple conversation which links them with support before it is too late.

Why It Matters?

Anyone can be hit by financial stress. Take as an example a young mum who is suddenly confronted with rent that she cannot afford due to the exit of her partner. Or a couple in their later years who have been working all their lives and are no longer able to afford to eat after they paid their mortgage. Or some young man slumbering in his car since home is not safe.

These are not figures, they are just people. And what they most require is not judgement, but association. When a conversation starts with greetings, it can lead to the provision of crucial services, assistance, and eventually, hope.

How The Spiers Centre Helps

We have a team that operates daily to ensure that people have a place to go:

  • Financial counselling to assist in massive debt.

  • Food and lights Household relief to put food on the table and the lights on.

  • Assistance in the face of family and domestic violence, advocating, referring, and caring.

  • A place where she can be heard, since the first step to healing is listening.

Using these services, we can not only solve immediate needs but also assist people and families to regain stability and future assurance.

Breaking Down Stigma

Stigma is one of the major obstacles to help-seeking. Many people think:

  • "I have a job; I do not need help"

  • "Others have it worse."

  • "I am supposed to be able to work this out myself"

The fact is that stress and misery may befall anybody. It is not a failure to make an early reach out it is a form of strength. We can dispel these myths by openly discussing them and we can also make people take up help before it is too late and they get into a breaking point.

What You Can Do

  • This week is the Homelessness Week, and you can be involved in the solution:

  • Begin with hello - visit a friend or neighbour or a colleague.

  • Pass the word of early connection.

  • Donate or create awareness of The Spiers Centre.

The difference comes in every act of connection. And yet that difference may begin with the simplest word: Hello.
