Australia is a culturally diverse country, and our older people have played an important role in building the communities we know today. As our population becomes increasingly diverse, aged care needs to recognise that every older person has different cultural, linguistic and personal needs. ❤️

The Association of Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) supports culturally appropriate services for older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. AfCAS works to improve the quality, accessibility and accountability of aged care while helping organisations understand and respond to the needs of CALD communities.

🤝 Why Culturally Appropriate Care Matters

For many older people, culture and language are an important part of their identity. Being able to communicate, maintain cultural connections and feel understood can help people feel respected, valued and included.

AfCAS provides training, support and advocacy to help make this possible. Its training supports organisations such as government bodies, universities, aged-care providers and communities to develop skills and approaches for culturally appropriate care.

AfCAS also helps connect CALD clients with specialised services, including translating and interpreting services and volunteer visitor programs. Through advocacy, forums, events and research, AfCAS promotes the benefits of culturally appropriate care and strengthens the voice of CALD communities.

🌱 How Can You Make a Difference?

Creating inclusive aged care is a shared responsibility. Local governments, aged-care organisations, businesses, community groups, donors, sponsors and volunteers can all play a role.

Organisations can work with AfCAS through partnerships, training and community engagement. Businesses, donors and sponsors can provide financial or other resources to support its work. Volunteers can contribute their time and help reduce social isolation, while community members can raise awareness about the importance of culturally appropriate care.

AfCAS is also working to strengthen its community connections, increase funding and resources, and recognise the diverse needs of CALD communities. Supporting these efforts can help build stronger and more sustainable services.
