There is a reciprocal relationship between the adulthood and culture. When caring for an older adult, it is important to respect not only their physical needs but also their culture, language, dietary preferences, traditions and values. Accordingly, culturally appropriate age care means providing support that respects the needs, values and cultural identity of older people. For instance, communicating with their culture and respecting their traditions can help them feel more comfortable and dignified. Therefore culturally appropriate care can help older people from multicultural communities to stay connected with their identity and community. At the same time their family members also gain the confidence that their loved one is being well cared for, with respect for their cultural needs.

The Association of Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) supports culturally diverse communities in Western Australia. AfCAS helps raise awareness about culturally appropriate services and encourages stronger connections between multicultural communities and aged-care services.
