Instagram vs TikTok for Small Businesses: Which Platform Is Better?

2 min read

Choosing the right social media platform can make digital marketing more manageable for a small business. Instagram and TikTok both offer valuable opportunities to reach customers, but their audiences, features and content styles differ.

Instagram: Build a Strong Visual Brand

Instagram is well suited to businesses wanting to showcase products, services and brand identity through visual content. Features such as Reels, Stories and feed posts allow businesses to combine short-form video, images and regular updates.

Instagram also has strong reach among younger adults. According to Pew Research Center (2025), 80% of U.S. adults aged 18–29 use Instagram, compared with 62% of those aged 30–49. Overall, half of U.S. adults surveyed reported using the platform.

For example, a local café could use Reels to showcase new menu items, Stories for daily specials and feed posts to build a consistent visual identity.(Instagram vs TikTok for Small Businesses)

TikTok: Create, Educate and Entertain

TikTok focuses strongly on short-form video, making it suitable for informal, entertaining and educational content. Behind-the-scenes videos, quick tutorials and product demonstrations can help businesses communicate in a more relatable way.

TikTok is particularly popular among younger audiences. Pew Research Center found that 63% of U.S. adults aged 18–29 use TikTok, compared with 44% of those aged 30–49 and 30% of those aged 50–64. Around 47% of 18–29-year-olds also use TikTok daily.

Instagram or TikTok?

There is no single winner. If your target audience spans a broader adult age range and your business relies on visual branding, Instagram may be a strong option. If your strategy focuses heavily on short-form, informal video and younger audiences, TikTok may deserve greater attention.

The key is to choose the platform that best matches your target audience, content style and marketing objectives.

Find the Platform That Works for You

Successful social media marketing is not about being everywhere—it is about being where your audience is and creating content they value.
