Growing Older with Dignity, Culture and Connection
As people get older, the experience should be one of being respected, understood and connected to what's most important to them. Culture may play a significant role for older people from cultural backgrounds in their daily lives. Any language, food and family traditions, celebrations and community relationships can be a part of an individual's identity and belonging. It is for this reason that culturally appropriate aged care is important.
What is Culturally Appropriate Care?
Culturally appropriate care includes respecting and comprehending a person's background culturally, values, way of living and preferences. It's all about knowing a person first and contemplating beyond a person's needs and. As of now, speaking in an understandable language, eating culturally similar food and keeping significant traditions can ensure an older person feel more respected and comfortable. These are certain things that might appear very trivial, but can give a more personalized and welcoming care.
Keeping Older People linked to social connections are significant for older individuals. Connecting with friends and family and cultural communities can offer them companionship and a sense of belonging. Families are also crucial. Discussing the culture and personal needs of older family members can help ensure that the care/support that is provided is respectful and appropriate.
A caring community hears, comprehends and values all individuals' backgrounds.
