Why Culturally Inclusive Care Matters in Aged Care
What if feeling at home could be part of quality aged care?
Aged care is not just about support with daily care; it is about the care of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) seniors. It is also about being understood, respected and valued for who they are.Language, traditions, food, beliefs and cultural practices can all shape how a person experiences care. The recognition of these aspects of identity can make older Australians feel more confident in their dignity, trust, connection and belonging.

More Than Just Care
Envision living in an aged care facility where you are able to speak the language you prefer, and where your culture and traditions are respected and your identity is valued. These may sound like no big deal, but they can really help to improve a person's sense of comfort and connectedness.
Culturally responsive care may include the appreciation of cultural practices, individual preferences and the allowance of seniors the opportunity to have meaningful attachments to their culture and community. The strategies can be used to develop a caring atmosphere in which individuals feel appreciated, valued and involved.
Culturally inclusive care is more than a "one size fits all" approach. It encourages providers to understand the diverse backgrounds of the people they support and create environments where everyone feels welcome.Families may also feel more confident and reassured when they are informed that their loved ones are receiving culturally responsive care.
Putting Culture at the Heart of Care
This is where AfCAS plays an important role. AfCAS provides aged care providers in Perth with support to enhance their cultural responsiveness by providing training, cultural audit and charters, mentoring and community engagement. These initiatives support providers to become more culturally aware and to use that awareness in effective practice to enhance the care experience for CALD seniors.
The goal is simple: culture should be part of care, not an afterthought. ❤️
Creating a More Inclusive Future
