Why Culturally Appropriate Care Matters
Australia is home to people from many different cultures, languages and backgrounds. This diversity is an important part of Australian society. When people access aged care and community services, they should feel respected, understood and comfortable. This is why culturally appropriate care is important, particularly for older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
Culturally appropriate care means recognizing and respecting a person’s cultural background, language, beliefs, values and individual needs. It is not about providing completely different care to every person. Instead, it is about understanding that people may have different experiences, preferences and expectations when receiving care and support.
For older people from CALD backgrounds, cultural understanding can make their experience with care services more comfortable. Differences in language, cultural practices or expectations may sometimes create challenges when communicating needs or accessing services. Care providers who take the time to understand these differences can create a more welcoming and inclusive environment.
Culturally appropriate care also starts with listening. Care providers can learn by speaking with the people and communities they support, asking questions and being open to different cultural perspectives. Understanding a person's background can help care providers communicate more effectively and respond to individual needs with greater respect.
How AfCAS Supports Culturally Appropriate Care
The Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) supports the delivery of quality and culturally appropriate services for people from diverse cultural and language backgrounds. AfCAS provides services including training, mentoring, cultural audits and community engagement to help organizations understand and respond to cultural diversity.
This work can help organizations develop a better understanding of the communities they serve and encourage more culturally appropriate approaches to care. Building this understanding is important because culturally appropriate care is not simply about cultural awareness; it is about putting that understanding into practice.
Ultimately, culturally appropriate care is about treating people with dignity, respect and understanding. When care providers take the time to listen and recogzise individual cultural needs, they can help create care experiences where people feel valued and included.
