What if ageing in Perth felt like coming home?

Moving to a new country can be an exciting new chapter.

But ageing in an unfamiliar environment can also bring challenges.

For older migrants, language barriers, unfamiliar services, and fewer social connections may make everyday life more difficult.

Being away from familiar traditions, food, language and community

can also lead to loneliness and a reduced sense of belonging.

But ageing abroad does not have to mean ageing alone.

How AfCAS Rewrote the Finale for Mr. Lee

Mr. Lee, a 75-year-old Hong Kong migrant living in Perth,

which helping him feel more connected and positive about ageing in Perth.

As someone from a different cultural background,

having access to services that recognise his culture and

communication needs has been important to his comfort and connection.

At AfCAS, Mr. Lee can communicate in a familiar language,

meet people who understand his cultural background,

and celebrate familiar cultural traditions and festivals together with others.

From sharing traditional food to celebrating important cultural occasions,

these simple connections can make a meaningful difference to his everyday experience.

Mr. Lee is satisfied with the service provided by AfCAS.

He feels supported and respected.

Rather than simply receiving practical assistance,

he can connect with people who understand the importance of culture and community.

His experience shows how culturally appropriate support can help older migrants

feel less isolated and more connected.

For older migrants, culturally appropriate support can be

about much more than providing a service.

It can create opportunities to talk, connect, share experiences and feel that you belong.

Mr. Lee's experience shows that when aged care recognises the person behind the service user, ageing can become a more positive and connected experience.

And sometimes, a little understanding can make a big difference.
