Every elder has a story. Every story matters.

Have you ever sat with an older person in your family and listened as they talked about their childhood, their home country, or a meal they used to enjoy? Sometimes, we hear these stories so often that we forget how special they are.

For many older people from multicultural communities in Perth, these stories are an important part of who they are. Their culture can be found in the language they speak, the food they grew up eating, the traditions they continue to practice, and the memories they carry with them.

As people grow older, staying connected to these things can become even more important. Aging should never mean leaving your identity behind. Good aged care is not only about helping someone with their everyday physical needs. It is also about understanding the person, their background, and the things that make them feel comfortable and valued.

For an older person, something as simple as hearing their own language, eating a familiar dish or talking about an important tradition can bring back a special memory.

Culturally inclusive care can help older people to share their stories and experiences, enjoy familiar food and traditions, stay connected to their cultural identity, maintain connections with family and community, and feel heard, respected, and valued.

At AfCAS, supporting multicultural older people means recognizing that everyone has a life story worth hearing. Their stories may be about moving to Australia, raising a family, celebrating cultural traditions, or simply remembering the food they enjoyed when they were young. These memories should not be forgotten. Sometimes, all it takes is a little time and genuine conversation.

Ask an older person about their childhood. Ask them about their favorite food. Ask them about a tradition they would like younger generations to remember. Then, just listen. Because listening can do more than starting a conversation. It can preserve a memory, connect generations, and help someone feel that their life and experiences still matter.

What is one story, food, tradition, or memory from an older person in your family or community that you will always remember?

Share it in the comments and help celebrate the voices and stories of older people in our multicultural community.
