With each passing year, we see more diversity within our growing communities. As a result, it has never been more important to create an environment that welcomes and understands everyone’s experiences as they age. I can only imagine what a challenging experience it would be for someone to navigate the healthcare or aged Care system when there are barriers based on culture, language, diet, etc. Many of our culturally and linguistic diversity Seniors live like this daily. But there are some wonderful organisations out there working to change this story and to help all Seniors feel empowered to live dignified lives.✊🏻

What does culturally appropriate service mean? 🤔

In essence, culturally appropriate service is taking the time to acknowledge and respect each person’s unique history, language, values, and customs when providing health and support services. No one should have to check their cultural identity at the door when entering a residential aged Care home or accessing community support. There is great benefit in receiving service from those who speak a person’s language (literally and culturally), which promotes greater comfort, less stress and increased trust between caregivers and recipients.

The role of afcas – creating opportunities 🎈

That is where the Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (afcas) comes in. Created specifically to respond to the needs of multicultural communities, afcas connects isolated Seniors to the health, ageing and disability services designed to support them.

Afcas’ core mission:

-raise awareness amongst both the general public and service providers about the unique requirements of cald communities.

-connect diverse communities directly with the ageing sector through a variety of mechanisms.

-empower Seniors and their families to know what options exist for accessing quality, culturally relevant Care.

Afcas delivers these goals through a range of initiatives such as professional development opportunities, cultural audits, community advisory services, and other strategies that convert mainstream Care into culturally safe practice. 🎗

Making a Difference one moment at a time. We don’t need large-scale reform to build a sense of community; small acts of kindness can make a huge impact. This is why initiatives run by community networks focus on funding Connections built around everyday things such as sharing a cup of coffee, celebrating a birthday with traditional food, or going out socially. 💫

No matter if you are a healthcare worker seeking to increase your cultural competencies or just want to support vulnerable Seniors, you are making a Difference by engaging with us.

"Afcas supports providers in the aged Care and disability sectors in ways that assist them to provide comprehensive support".

How you can get involved together we will develop an inclusive aged Care model that leaves no one behind due to lack of language or cultural understanding.

Spread the word: tell others in your circle about the need for inclusion in your aged Care models.

Become a supporter: consider supporting a program that brings joy and connection to isolated migrant Seniors.🙌🏻

Every senior deserves care that respects who they are. Contact AfCAS today to learn more about training programs, advisory services and ways to engage with inclusive Care models by visiting the AfCAS Website. 👉🏻 https://www.afcas.net/
