Aged Care That Feels Like Home: Why Culture Matters

Why Culturally Appropriate Aged Care Matters

Growing older should not mean leaving behind the culture, language and traditions that have shaped a person’s life. For older people from multicultural backgrounds, feeling understood can make an important difference to their aged-care experience. From the food they eat and the language they speak to religious practices and family traditions, cultural identity continues to matter at every stage of life.

This is where the Association of Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) plays an important role.

AfCAS supports aged-care service providers across Western Australia in improving their understanding of culturally appropriate care. Through education, resources, collaboration and advocacy, the organisation helps providers better respond to the diverse cultural and linguistic needs of older people in their communities.

More Than Just Speaking the Same Language

Culturally appropriate aged care is about more than translation. It means recognising that every person brings their own values, experiences and expectations into aged care.

Something that seems small-such as preparing familiar food, understanding an important cultural tradition or communicating in a way that makes someone feel comfortable-can contribute to a greater sense of belonging and respect.

For aged-care providers, developing cultural awareness can therefore help create environments where older people feel more understood and valued. It can also help staff build stronger relationships with residents, clients and their families.

Supporting a Multicultural Western Australia

Western Australia is home to people from many different cultural backgrounds, making inclusive aged-care services increasingly important. A one-size-fits-all approach may not recognise the different needs and expectations that exist across multicultural communities.

By supporting aged-care organisations with information, education and opportunities for collaboration, AfCAS contributes to a more inclusive approach-one where cultural identity is recognised as an important part of providing respectful care.

Creating Care Where Everyone Belongs

Everyone deserves to age in an environment where they can stay connected to who they are. Creating culturally appropriate aged care is not only about understanding difference; it is about listening, learning and recognising the individual behind the care.

Whether you work in aged care, support an older family member or want to learn more about culturally appropriate services, AfCAS provides information and resources to help build greater cultural understanding.
