Why Culturally Appropriate Care Truly Matters

Australia is wonderfully diverse place. We speak differently, celebrate differently, and carry our own stories. That means care can’t be the same for everyone. Looking after someone properly isn’t just about their health. It’s about making them feel welcome, understood, and valued for who they are.
This is what AfCAS stands for — the Association for Culturally Appropriate Services. They work to connect communities with care providers, so no one feels left out just because of where they come from.
Think about it: being able to speak your own language, eat food you love, or follow traditions that matter to you — these things aren’t extra. They’re part of your life. And as we get older, having those familiar things around us makes all the difference.
AfCAS helps care teams do better. They offer training, mentoring, cultural audits, and bring people together. They don’t just tell teams what to do. They help them listen first, then adapt the way they work. When care providers truly understand, trust grows. Families feel confident. And older people get care that actually fits their lives.
They also share information online — so more people learn what cultural care means and how they can help.
Building a kind community is up to all of us. We don’t need to do something big. Just listen. Be kind. Respect our differences. That’s how we make sure everyone feels they belong.
