Why Culturally Appropriate Aged Care Matters in Multicultural Perth

Why Culturally Appropriate Aged Care Matters in Multicultural Perth 🌏
Imagine growing older 👴🏾 in a place where the people caring for you do not understand the language you speak, the food you grew up eating or with the traditions that have shaped your life. For many older people from culturally diverse backgrounds, these aren’t simply preferences, they are part of their identity.
As Perth becomes increasingly multicultural, conversations about aged care need to go beyond physical assistance. Culturally appropriate aged care recognizes the person behind the care and respects the language, beliefs, traditions and relationships that matter to them.
Culture is part of feeling at home
Culture can influence everyday experiences, from what we eat and how we communicate to celebrations, spirituality and relationships with family.
For an older person entering aged care or receiving support at home, maintaining these connections can provide familiarity and a sense of belonging.
Language is particularly important. Being able to express needs, concerns and emotions in a familiar language can help an older person feel heard rather than simply cared for.
Why multicultural families need accessible information
Navigating aged care can already feel complicated. For families from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, differences in language and familiarity with Australia’s aged-care system may create additional challenges.
This is why culturally responsive organizations and accessible information matter. They can help communities better understand available services while encouraging providers to recognize that there is no single experience of ageing.
Supporting culturally appropriate care 🤝🫂
The Association of Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) works within this space by supporting culturally appropriate aged care services and multicultural communities.
Its work reminds us of something simple but important, ageing should not require someone to leave their cultural identity behind.
Whether you are supporting a parent, grandparent, community member or simply learning more about inclusive aged care, understanding cultural needs is a meaningful place to start.
