A day in the life of an ECU student at the City Campus often looks exciting from the outside. But in reality, some days feel far more overwhelming than expected — especially when you’re still adjusting to a completely new learning environment. Explore a day in the life of an ECU student in Australia, balancing study, stress, and personal life at university.
I usually start the day thinking everything is manageable. Attending lectures feels familiar at first, but it doesn’t take long to realise that studying here is very different. Instead of explaining everything in detail, lectures often provide only a basic framework. What comes next depends entirely on how much effort I put into understanding the material on my own.
As the day goes on, the pressure begins to build. There are multiple readings to complete, many of them long and complex. At the beginning, I tried to read everything carefully, believing that was the only way to keep up. However, it quickly became exhausting. I often found myself unsure of what really mattered, which made the process even more stressful.
Later, when I sit down to work on assignments, the challenge becomes more intense. Writing is no longer just about expressing ideas clearly. It requires building strong arguments, using evidence, and organising thoughts in a logical way. Even when I understand the topic, putting everything together can feel frustrating.
There are moments when everything seems overwhelming — not just because of the workload, but because I am trying to adapt to a completely different way of learning. Instead of being given clear answers, I have to question, analyse, and form my own opinions. At times, it feels mentally draining.
However, over time, I began to realise that managing stress does not mean avoiding it. It means learning how to respond to it. I stopped trying to do everything perfectly and started focusing on what actually works for me. Planning my day, taking short breaks, and stepping away when things feel too intense have made a noticeable difference. Even something simple like going for a walk or spending time with friends around campus helps me reset.
Looking back, I’ve learned that studying at university is not just about academic performance. It’s also about understanding how to manage pressure and maintain balance in everyday life.
