For many older Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, quality care means more than meeting physical needs. It means being heard, understood and respected for who they are, where they come from and what matters to them.

Why Cultural Understanding Matters

The Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) works to foster and support culturally appropriate services for the CALD aged care community while advocating for better quality, accessibility and accountability.

AfCAS brings together training, support and advocacy to help organisations and communities build the skills and connections needed for culturally appropriate care. This includes developing workforce capability, facilitating access to interpreting and specialised services, supporting volunteer visitor programs, and promoting evidence-based practice.

Listening to the CALD Voice

Cultural diversity is never one-size-fits-all. AfCAS recognises that people may have multiple identities and diverse needs, making genuine community engagement essential. Its current focus includes strengthening the CALD voice, building stronger partnerships and increasing resources to create lasting impact.
