Hello. It’s a small word – but for someone in crisis, it can be the start of a new journey. Amid Western Australia’s rising cost of living and financial hardship, a simple “hello” may be the first ray of hope for a struggling neighbour. At The Spiers Centre, we see every day how a greeting and a listening ear can transform an overwhelming silence into a story of hope.
Catherine's Story
Meet Catherine - a mother of three from Perth who felt invisible and alone. Escaping domestic violence and unable to afford rent after prices skyrocketed, Catherine found herself living in a tent in her grandparents’ garage. She was overwhelmed by shame and hesitant to seek help, believing others had it worse.
That began to change when a community volunteer reached out and said hello at a local event, gently encouraging Catherine to visit The Spiers Centre. That one greeting led to a conversation – and that conversation became Catherine’s first step toward regaining stability.
How The Spiers Centre Helps
At The Spiers Centre, “It starts with hello” is more than a saying - it’s our approach to caring for our community. Our team welcomed Catherine without judgment. Financial counsellors helped negotiate her bills and access emergency relief for food and essentials. She joined our support groups (with free childcare in our crèche) and discovered she wasn’t alone in her struggles. Each week, that initial hello grew into ongoing conversations - guiding Catherine through budgeting, securing safe housing, and even finding emotional support for her trauma. Over time, Catherine began to feel empowered and hopeful about her family’s future.
Emotionally, that first “hello” told Catherine what everyone in hardship deserves to hear: you are seen, and you matter. It created an instant human connection that cut through her isolation and fear. She went from feeling like “just another statistic” to a person with an entire community backing her. Her story is a powerful reminder that simple acts of kindness – like greeting someone by name or asking if they’re okay – can spark real change.
If Catherine’s journey resonates with you, consider joining the story. Say hello! Reach out to a neighbour or friend who is struggling. Or join us at The Spiers Centre - volunteer, donate, share your skills - and help us continue turning hellos into hope for local families. Every friendly greeting or small offer of help can start a ripple of positive change.
Together, let’s grow a community where no one struggles in silence. Start today - smile and say hello to someone, and watch how a door to hope and healing opens.
