Why Is Culture important as We Age?

Culture is a part of who we are, which can influence the way we communicate, the food we eat, the tradition we follow and the way we stay connected with family and friends.

For an older person, being able to communicate in a common language or take part in activities connected to their culture can make a big difference, which can help them feel comfortable and connected rather than isolated.

Culturally appropriate services can make things accessible to families. Family members and caretakers may have an important role in supporting older relatives. When services understand cultural preferences and family needs, which can be easier for families to find proper support.

How Can We support Older People?

Creating a supportive community is something that involves families, community organizations and service providers.

We can start by listening to older people and can understand why it is important for them. Service providers can make information easy to understand and ensure that their services are welcoming people from different cultural backgrounds.

Digital communication can play a role too. Websites and Social media help older people, families and caretakers to find information about the available services. When online information is easy to understand, simple and easy to access, which make people easier to discover the available for them.
