From Snooze to Stride: How Show Up Run Club Changed My Mornings

No way! Is that my alarm clock again? You mean it’s 5 a.m. already? 😩

For a few seconds, thoughts of snoozing my alarm rush through my mind.

I have to go to work. Bills need to be paid. I have an assignment to finish. And I need that distinction!

All these thoughts run through my head as I force myself out of bed moodily, of course. I jump into the shower, let the water run over my face, get dressed and make my way to the train station.

By 6 a.m., almost everyone on the train looks half asleep. Nobody is smiling. Some people even look angry, and honestly, I understand why.

That was my life before I joined a 5AM run club.

And that’s where everything changed.

From Sleepy Mornings to Starting My Day Energised

Once I started running in the morning, I noticed something different.

I had more energy throughout the day. I felt more productive at work and when completing my assignments. Even my mood changed.

I could actually smile on the 6 a.m. train!

Naturally, I wanted to understand why running was making me feel so good. So, like many of us do when we’re curious about something, I Googled it.

What I discovered made me want to keep going. Regular physical activity can support both physical and mental wellbeing, and suddenly the way I was feeling after those early morning runs started to make sense.

But running wasn’t just changing my mornings.

Even That Leftover Pizza Started Looking Different 🍕

You know that slice of pizza left over from last night’s dinner?

Before I started running, I probably would have grabbed it for breakfast while rushing out the door.

Now?

I’m thinking twice.

Running has encouraged me to pay more attention to my eating habits and the choices I make for my body.

Then came discipline.

Some mornings I’m excited to run. Other mornings, my bed feels like the greatest place on Earth.

That’s when I realised something important:

Motivation won’t always show up. You can.

Getting out of bed and running even when I didn’t feel like it started teaching me discipline. Surprisingly, that discipline began trickling into other areas of my life my studies, work, assignments and everyday responsibilities.

And then came something I hadn’t expected.

Friendship. ❤️

I Found More Than Running. I Found a Community.

Running introduced me to people who encourage me, hold me accountable and push me on mornings when my bed looks much more attractive than my running shoes.

There is something different about knowing that other people are getting out of bed too. On those mornings when motivation disappears, having people waiting for you gives you another reason to get up.

That experience inspired Show Up Run Club a community for students who want to move, connect and motivate each other.

And our motto couldn't be simpler:

JUST SHOW UP.

Good day? Show up.

Bad day? Show up.

Full of energy? Show up.

Don't feel like running? Show up anyway.

You don't need to be the fastest runner. You don't need expensive running shoes. You don't even need to consider yourself a runner yet.

You just need to show up.
