Dear Facebook, It’s Time to Move On

Dear Facebook,

We need to talk.

We have been together for a long time. You were there when I first wanted to connect with friends, share photos, see what everyone was doing, and stay updated with people I hadn't seen for years. At one point, opening Facebook every day felt almost like a routine.

But lately, things have changed.

Our relationship doesn't feel the same anymore. What once felt like a place to connect has slowly become a place filled with advertisements, endless scrolling, suggested content, and information that I never asked to see. Sometimes I open the app just to check one thing, and suddenly I have spent far more time there than I intended.

I also started asking myself an important question: Am I using Facebook, or is Facebook using me?

I don't want to spend my time endlessly scrolling through content chosen by an algorithm. I want a social media experience where I have more control over what I see, who I interact with, and how my online community works.

That's why I'm looking for something different.

Maybe it's time to try an alternative such as Mastodon, where social interaction can be centred around smaller communities rather than one enormous platform controlled by a single company. It may not have all the features or the massive number of users that you have, but perhaps that's exactly what makes it interesting.

I'm not saying you were always bad, Facebook. You gave people a way to stay connected when distance separated them. You helped people find old friends, build communities, and share important moments.

But sometimes, relationships change.

So, Facebook, this isn't really goodbye forever. It's goodbye to the idea that you're the only place where we can connect with people.

I'm ready to explore something new.

Thank you for the memories.

It's not you. It's me. I just want a different kind of social life.

Goodbye, Facebook.

— A former daily scroller
