Culturally Inclusive Care: Building a Stronger Community for Multicultural Seniors

Perth is home to people from many cultures, languages and backgrounds. As our communities become increasingly diverse, culturally appropriate aged care plays an important role in helping older people feel respected, understood and connected.

The Association of Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) supports older people from multicultural communities in Perth. Its focus on culturally appropriate services recognises that every person has individual needs, cultural values and life experiences that should be respected.

For seniors, quality care is not only about practical assistance. It can also be about maintaining meaningful connections, feeling a sense of belonging and being able to continue expressing cultural identity. When older people feel understood and valued, they can remain connected with their families, communities and social networks.

Culturally inclusive care can therefore contribute to a stronger and more welcoming community. Organisations such as AfCAS demonstrate the importance of considering culture and individual circumstances when supporting older members of multicultural communities.

We can all play a role in creating more inclusive communities by learning about culturally appropriate aged-care services and sharing information with older people and their families.
