Getting older should be about feeling values, respected and connected to the community. For many older Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, cultures, language and family traditions can make how they experience support. Having services that recognise these differences can make people feel more comfortable, understood and included.

and included.

Why Cultural Understanding Matters

Imagine moving into that part of life and finding that the people supporting you understand not only your practical needs, but also the food you enjoy, the language you speak and the traditions that are very important to you. These small things can make a big difference. Respecting cultures of older people feel more confident when communicating and accessing support.

Appropriate services can offer safety to families. Families who wish to be loved, respected and treated with dignity by their family members and to have their family background respected. When needed the culture are identified, can help build better relationships among the older people, families and service providers.

How AfCAS Supports Multicultural Communities

The Association of Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) supports culturally diverse communities in Perth, Western Australia. Its work is focusing on promoting culturally appropriate services and encouraging the understanding of the needs of different communities.

AfCAS recognises that people are individuals, and their backgrounds can influence what respectful and appropriate support looks like. By raising awareness and supporting cultures, AfCAS contributes to a more to community where older people can feel seen, heard and valued. 💙

Creating a Stronger Sense of Belonging

When people feel understood, support can become more than a service, it can become a meaningful part of everyday life.

Ageing is not just about receiving support. It is about staying connected your to people, culture and community. A good and welcoming environment can help older Australians maintain a sense of identity and belonging while continuing to participate in community life.

We can all play a part in creating more communities. Listening carefully, respecting different traditions and being open to learning about other cultures are first simple steps that can help make a positive difference.
