Why culture, connection and belonging still matter as we grow older.

Older adults from diverse cultural backgrounds connecting and enjoying time together in a community garden
Culture connects us. Belonging brings us together.

Meet Sara.

Sara moved to Australia in her twenties. Young, adventurous and curious about the world, she settled in Perth, a city that quickly captured her heart.

The years passed faster than she imagined. Perth became home. Sara built a life, made friends and formed meaningful connections with people from her community. There were celebrations, conversations, shared experiences and plenty of laughter along the way.

But life happened. Some friends moved interstate, while others returned to their home countries. Gradually, the familiar circle around Sara became smaller.

Today, Sara is 65.

But the things that make Sara who she is haven't disappeared. Her culture, memories, interests, laughter and desire to belong are still very much part of her.

Growing Older, Staying You

Sara isn't looking for anything extraordinary.

She wants to plant flowers in the garden, take a walk to keep active, enjoy a cup of tea while watching the sunset, or simply spend time with someone who can make her laugh until her ribs hurt.

These may seem like little things, but sometimes the little things are big things.

Growing older shouldn't mean losing connection to the activities, people and cultural experiences that bring meaning and joy to our lives. Sometimes, companionship can simply mean having someone there to share those everyday moments

Culture Is Part of Our Story

Australia is home to people from many different cultures and backgrounds. People bring with them languages, traditions, food, stories, values and experiences that become part of the communities we call home.

And those parts of our identity don't suddenly disappear when we grow older.

For someone like Sara, belonging can mean being around people who respect where she comes from and allow her to simply be herself. She doesn't want to feel like she must try hard to fit in. She wants to feel seen, heard, respected and connected.

Because sometimes meaningful connection begins with something incredibly simple Someone showing up. 💜

Sara Finds Connection

Sara's search for connection eventually leads her to the Association of Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS).

Through this connection, Sara begins to experience what she had been missing a sense of belonging. She can share stories, enjoy conversations and connect with people from different cultural backgrounds while still feeling that her own culture and identity are respected.

For Sara, it is the simple moments that matter. A conversation over a cup of tea, time spent in t

the garden, sharing a laugh or simply having someone there can make an ordinary day feel a little brighter.

Most importantly, Sara doesn't have to leave her identity behind to feel included.

She can grow older while still being Sara.

And that's the bigger message behind her story. Cultural connection isn't only about where we come from. It's also about feeling understood, respected and included in the community around us.

So, think about your own future:

What kind of community would you want to grow older in?

One where your culture is understood, your identity is respected and you can continue doing the things that bring you joy?

Because we don't simply have a culture.

We are our culture.

Take a moment to think about what culture, connection and belonging would mean to you as you grow older.
