Aged Care That Understands Culture

Growing older can bring many changes, but a person’s culture, language and identity remain an important part of who they are. For seniors from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, receiving care that understands and respects these differences can make them feel more comfortable, connected and valued. While choosing aged care for our family members we need to understand these needs so we can select the right support for our elderly loved ones.

More Than Just Care

Culturally appropriate care is about understanding the person behind their care needs. Familiar food, traditions, beliefs and cultural practices can help seniors maintain a sense of identity and belonging.

Language is equally important. Some older migrants may find communicating in English difficult, and language differences can increase feelings of isolation. AfCAS highlights that this can become particularly challenging for seniors who return to using their first language or dialect as they grow older.

Being able to communicate in a familiar language can make everyday conversations easier and more meaningful. It can help seniors express their needs and feel understood rather than excluded.

The Importance of Social Connection

Care is not only about physical support. Friendly conversations, sharing stories and spending time with someone can provide valuable companionship.

For a CALD senior, connecting with someone who understands their language or cultural background can create a stronger sense of familiarity and belonging. AfCAS delivers the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, which provides friendship and companionship to eligible older people experiencing social isolation.

AfCAS works to improve access to culturally appropriate services for CALD communities and seniors. Its work includes training, support and advocacy, helping organisations and communities provide more culturally appropriate services.
