Beyond Four Walls: Connecting Generations Through Aged Care Volunteering

What If a conversation with you became something someone looked forward to all week?
For an older migrant, feeling at home means more than four walls. It can begin with a familiar greeting, a shared song or someone willing to listen. Aged care volunteering brings generations together through friendship and shared experiences.
For students and working adults, becoming an aged care volunteer visitor offers a meaningful way to contribute while discovering stories, perspectives and traditions beyond their own.
How does aged care volunteering connect generations?
Imagine having a lifetime of stories to tell, but few people to share them with. Aged care volunteering creates space for those stories to become conversations that connect generations. Ask about a favorite celebration, a first job or a treasured family recipe, and share something of your own life, too. You may discover a shared love of music or a fresh perspective on a challenge you face. Through these exchanges, both people can feel heard, learn from each other, and build a friendship they look forward to.
Your next conversation could be the beginning of a friendship.
Why does culturally appropriate companionship matter?
For people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, language and traditions can hold a lifetime of meaning. Companionship that respects these connections can help someone feel recognized, valued and comfortable being themselves.
Begin with the person: ask which name they prefer, what interests them and what they would enjoy doing together. People from the same cultural background may have different preferences. Listen with curiosity, respect their choices and let them decide which stories to share.
Help create connections where every culture feels welcome.
How can you get involved with AfCAS?

The Association for Culturally Appropriate Services (AfCAS) delivers the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme in Western Australia, offering friendship and companionship to eligible older people experiencing isolation.
If you are bilingual or from a non-English background and have two hours a month available, enquire about visiting a migrant senior. AfCAS also offers opportunities to gain Australian workplace experience and mentoring, undertake training for aged care environments, and explore board experience through membership.
Ready to contribute and learn? Email info@afcas.net to express your interest in volunteering and to send a copy of your résumé. For membership enquiries, complete the membership form and ask about opportunities to gain board experience.
